    NiO Exchange Bias Layers Grown by Direct Ion Beam Sputtering of a Nickel Oxide Target

    A new process for fabricating NiO exchange bias layers has been developed. The process involves the direct ion beam sputtering (IBS) of a NiO target. The process is simpler than other deposition techniques for producing NiO buffer layers, and facilitates the deposition of an entire spin-valve layered structure using IBS without breaking vacuum. The layer thickness and temperature dependence of the exchange field for NiO/NiFe films produced using IBS are presented and are similar to those reported for similar films deposited using reactive magnetron sputtering. The magnetic properties of highly textured exchange couples deposited on single crystal substrates are compared to those of simultaneously deposited polycrystalline films, and both show comparable exchange fields. These results are compared to current theories describing the exchange coupling at the NiO/NiFe interface.Comment: 9 pages, Latex 2.09, 3 postscript figures.     Regulated peristalsis into the acidic region of the _Drosophila_ larval midgut is controlled by a novel component of the Autonomic Nervous System

    The underlying cellular and molecular mechanisms that regulate and coordinate critical physiological processes such as peristalsis are complex, often cryptic, and involve the integration of multiple tissues and organ systems within the organism. We have identified a completely novel component of the larval autonomic nervous system in the _Drosophila_ larval midgut that is essential for the peristaltic movement of food from the anterior midgut into the acidic region of the midgut. We have named this region the Superior Cupric Autonomic Nervous System or SCANS. Located at the junction of the anterior and the acidic portions of the midgut, the SCANS is characterized by a cluster of a novel neuro-enteroendocrine cells that we call Lettuce Head Cells, a valve, and two anterior muscular tethers to the dorsal gastric caeca. Using cell ablation and ectopic activation via expression of the _Chlamydomonas reinhardtii_ blue-light activated channelrhodopsin, we demonstrate that the SCANS and in particular the Lettuce Head Cells are both necessary and sufficient for peristalsis and perhaps serve a larger role by coordinating digestion throughout the anterior midgut with development and growth

    Fusarium Head Blight (FHB), commonly known as scab, has been a severe problem for wheat producers in recent years. This study estimates the economic value of crop losses suffered by wheat producers in the 1990s. Nine states and three wheat classes are included in the analysis, which considers the effects of scab on both production and average prices received. The cumulative value of losses (1991-97) in scab-affected regions is estimated at $1.3 billion.     NASA's SDR Standard: Space Telecommunications Radio System

    A software defined radio (SDR) architecture used in space-based platforms proposes to standardize certain aspects of radio development such as interface definitions, functional control and execution, and application software and firmware development. NASA has charted a team to develop an open software defined radio hardware and software architecture to support NASA missions and determine the viability of an Agency-wide Standard. A draft concept of the proposed standard has been released and discussed among organizations in the SDR community. Appropriate leveraging of the JTRS SCA, OMG s SWRadio Architecture and other aspects are considered. A standard radio architecture offers potential value by employing common waveform software instantiation, operation, testing and software maintenance. While software defined radios offer greater flexibility, they also poses challenges to the radio development for the space environment in terms of size, mass and power consumption and available technology. An SDR architecture for space must recognize and address the constraints of space flight hardware, and systems along with flight heritage and culture. NASA is actively participating in the development of technology and standards related to software defined radios. As NASA considers a standard radio architecture for space communications, input and coordination from government agencies, the industry, academia, and standards bodies is key to a successful architecture. The unique aspects of space require thorough investigation of relevant terrestrial technologies properly adapted to space. The talk will describe NASA s current effort to investigate SDR applications to space missions and a brief overview of a candidate architecture under consideration for space based platforms

    North Dakota net farm income declined in 1997 due to adverse weather conditions and low prices. The total income loss in 1997 was estimated to be 394million,whichwasdividedinto394 million, which was divided into 290 million due to weather and diseases, and $104 million due to lower-than-average prices. Net farm income losses were largest in Region 3 (Northeast), followed by Regions 1 (Northwest) and 6 (East Central).
